I Spent $20,000 in One Month on My Business. Here’s Why.

Advisory, Profit First

Here is something most business owners will not tell you.

Growth costs money before it makes money.

This month I invested $20,000 back into my business. Not on things that look impressive. On four things that will quietly make everything I do better over the next 12 months.

I want to walk you through every dollar, because I think the honest conversation about what it actually takes to build a sustainable business is one we need more of.

The Four Investments

1. Professional copywriting

I had been writing my own copy for years. Long enough to know it was not working as well as it should.

The reality is, I am a bookkeeper and Profit First professional. I am not a copywriter. So I brought in Claire, a specialist in messaging for service-based businesses, to refine how we present the Financial Calm System and our offers.

If people do not immediately understand how you can help them, they move on. Great copy fixes that. And it pays for itself every time it converts the right client.

2. An AI retreat

AI is still a small part of how I run Blu Bookkeepers. But the pace of change is fast, and I had a choice: wait until I was forced to adapt, or go all in now.

I chose all in. Not because it is a trend, but because the business owners who invest in learning before they are forced to are always the ones who come out ahead.

If you are thinking you do not need to worry about AI yet, I would gently push back. The time to learn is before you need it.

3. A sales retreat

This was the hardest investment to make. I have always told myself I just want to help people, not sell to them.

But here is the truth I had to face: if I can see exactly how I can help someone and I still hesitate on the pricing conversation or give too many options instead of a clear recommendation, I am not helping them. I am leaving them stuck.

Selling is not manipulation. Done well, it is service. And investing in real, ethical sales skills is one of the most direct ways to increase the number of people you can actually help.

4. Annual subscription prepayments

This is the Profit First move that does not get enough attention.

At EOFY, I looked at every software tool we pay for monthly and prepaid the annual subscription where I could. The result: a discount on most tools, cleaner cash flow next year, and deductible expenses brought into this financial year.

The money came from my operating expense account. Not from tax savings, not from profit. From the system. Because when your Profit First allocations are working, strategic spending decisions like this are easy to make.

(Always check with your accountant before doing this. Make sure it makes sense for your specific situation.)

The Bigger Lesson

None of these investments are the kind that get likes or comments. Nobody posts about prepaying their accounting software. Nobody films a reel about hiring a copywriter.

But they are the decisions that build a business that lasts.

The business can only grow as fast as the person running it. If you are not developing, the business plateaus. And if you are making your investment decisions from fear instead of data, you will keep putting off the things that would actually move you forward.

A Money First CEO invests with intention. From margin. In the things that make the business stronger, not just the things that make it look bigger.

Your One Takeaway

Think about one area of your business where you have been doing it yourself because you did not want to spend the money.

Ask yourself honestly: is that costing you more in time and results than it would cost to bring in a professional?

If the answer is yes, that is your next investment.
