Welcome to this blog post inspired by the Money First CEO podcast, designed for business owners ready to take control of their finances and make their money work smarter. I’m Harman Johnston, a bookkeeper, Profit First professional, business coach, and mum of two from Sydney, Australia. I’ve built a successful business by mastering money habits and systems that foster true freedom.
This blog provides you with a game-changing concept to help you work less and earn more: the 80/20 rule, also known as the Pareto Principle. Let’s dive into how you can leverage this rule to optimise your business and life.
- Understanding the 80/20 Rule
The 80/20 rule suggests that 80% of your results come from just 20% of your efforts. In my own business journey, I realised that two out of my ten clients were generating 80% of the revenue. By focusing on those top clients, my profit increased by 35% over a few months. Studies show this principle is widely applicable, often finding that 80% of revenue comes from 20% of clients or products.
- Why Most Business Owners Misstep
Many of us distribute our energy too thinly, spending time on low-value tasks that don’t significantly impact results. This is both emotionally draining and financially limiting, as it reduces the money flowing into your profit accounts. The 80/20 rule is transformative because it aligns with the Profit First philosophy. By concentrating on the 20% of activities or clients that drive most of your revenue, you protect profits and free up valuable time.
- Implementing the 80/20 Rule
Here’s how you can apply this concept to your business:
1. Analyse Your Data:
Review your sales data from the past six months. Use tools like spreadsheets or accounting software to identify the top 20% of clients, products, or services responsible for 80% of your revenue.
2. Prioritise High-Value Work:
Give greater attention to your top clients. Upsell and request referrals, replicating their profiles to discover similar clients or products. Focus on offerings with the highest margins.
3. Cut or Delegate the Rest:
Phase out or delegate low-value clients or tasks. For instance, a client of mine found that branding for startups was her top income generator, so she focused on branding packages rather than one-off projects. Her revenue doubled within a year by working less and earning more.
Overcoming Resistance to Change
You may fear losing clients or limiting your focus too much. As someone who has experienced this hesitation, I can assure you that the 80/20 rule isn’t about outright rejection. It’s about intentional acceptance of what truly matters. Start small and track the results, gradually phasing out low-value tasks.
Your Action Step
This week, analyse your client list or sales data to find the top 20% revenue drivers. Create a strategy to prioritise these efforts. Track the impact on profit over the coming month, and reflect on how focusing on effective activities feels.
Embrace the 80/20 rule to work smarter and live better. Thank you for tuning into the Money First CEO podcast, where putting money first unlocks the options and freedom you deserve.
